Goodnight...

"Mommy, I’m scared.”

“Oh Jonathan, not again. We talked about this, remember? You need to sleep, you have a big day tomorrow with the field trip.”

“But”…

“Trust me on this honey. I promise you. There are no such things as monsters.”

“Ok, mommy. You really promise?”

“I do, baby.”

“Mommy?”

“Yes, baby?”

“Can you leave the door open?”

“Sigh. Sure. Sleep well, ok. I love you.”

“Love you, mommy.”

Rachel walked down the narrow hallway to her bedroom. She got in and shut the door. Shrugged off her robe and stood by the bed. She should probably speak to his teacher tomorrow. Maybe something was going on at school?

She was so lost in thought, that she almost didn’t hear it the first time. A high, childlike voice. A voice she knew and loved.

She turned around in confusion and saw him. Her eyes widened. He was almost exactly the same, but… so wrong. Almost like he had been reassembled in a hurry. She saw spines and hair where there should be none, and rows of sharp, pointy teeth. God those teeth!

His talons clicked along with old wallpaper, as he shuffled towards her.

As she whimpered, his fetid breath rasped over her face. “why would you lie to me, mommy?”

Girls and Boys and all that noise!

In a curious case of reverse gender inequality, someone asked this question recently. Why is it considered acceptable to say “we want a baby girl”, or even “gender doesn’t matter”. If one wants a baby boy, is it still taboo to express that?

Valentine's day

We've been married almost 13 years. We're not the limber, young newlyweds - ready to drop everything to run away on a weekend together. We've aged, we've changed and we've learned so much about ourselves and each other. We've had 2 kids together, changed endless diapers, laughed together at baby toes and toots, bought a house, gotten our siblings successfully married (to each other!) and held down good jobs. We've seen euphoric highs, and we've shared some crushing lows which only made us grow more fiercely protective of each other.  I used to be impulsive, willful and headstrong. Thought I knew better. Thought I was this larger than life person with intense emotions and eyes full of stars. You know what my husband changed about that? Nothing! He still believes all those wonderful things about me and still looks at me like I'm the most exquisite woman he's ever laid eyes on. He celebrates my passions and holds me safe when life deals me a few b...

To err is human

There is a force on earth as strong as gravity. It holds us ransom, much like gravity does. But it unlike gravity, this force transcends time and generations, casting its dark shadow on entire family trees right from the root to the tips of unborn buds. This force - if it had a physical form; would be black and pulsating, knotted and hideous. It would scar everything it saw and ruin everything it touched. But despite existing solely in our hearts, it causes the same destruction. I’m not talking about a mythological force or a supernatural one. I’m talking about the real and very complex human emotion of prejudice. Or in simpler terms - hatred. Hatred starts innocuously. A passing remark by a parent/ a lazy comment by a teacher. A skewed TV show, a cruel act witnessed. But the child is listening, and the child is watching. And the seeds are growing into ugly saplings, birthing prejudices and intolerance. To an extent, this is unavoidable. And honestly, impossible to prevent....
